It’s not too early to begin planning for the fall. Flavors of Fall, a free annual festival that includes live entertainment, dancing and family activities, returns to Reston Town Center on October 6.

Admission and parking are free for the event. Restaurants will serve up samplings of their favorite falls menus. Tickets are $1 each or $20 for 24 tickets. Most food tastings require between one and five tickets.

Beer prices are five tickets for a 16-ounce, mainstream beer, six tickets for a 12-ounce craft beer and three tickets for a five-ounce craft beer.  Wine is six tickets for a five-ounce poor and one ticket per wine tasting.

More information on the event will be released soon. The event is produced by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce.

Today is International Women’s Day and Lake Anne Brew House is brewing up something special to celebrate.

The business, which is located on 11424 Washington Plaza West, will join 15 breweries to make a special beer called 15 Shades of Grisette. The recipe was piloted at Lake Anne Brew House.

The collaboration is part of the Pink Boots Society Collaboration Brew Day, which aims to raise the profile of women’s roles in the beer industry.

A release party will be held at Old Ox Brewery on April 13, followed by a taproom release at Lake Anne Brew House on April 14.

As a female owned brewery, with a female Brewer on staff, we are active members of the Pink Boots Society (PBS), which is an organization that supports women in the Brewing industry. PBS sponsors an annual collaborative Brewing day (on national Women’s Day) where breweries are encouraged to come together and Brew a beer which will be shared among all participants. Portions of proceeds realized from the sales of the beer at each location go to sponsor scholarships and programs funded by PBS.

An opening day has been set for Total Wine & More. The beer, wine and spirit purveyor will open on March 15 at 11620 Plaza America, according to the the store’s Facebook page.

The grand opening day will include free wine tastings and opening specials. Details are expected by March 1.

Total Wine & More replaced Staples, which closed in October last year after opening in 2011. The store has other locations in Sterling, Fairfax and McLean.

Total Wine & More is eying open day at Plaza America.

Hiring has begun for all positions at the beer, wine and spirit purveyor, which will be located on 11620 Plaza America Drive.

Although hiring is in full-swing, a corporate office representative declined to indicate when the store will open. It was expected to open by the end of last year, according to the Washington Business Journal.

“At this time, the exact dates and locales have not been finalized,” the representative wrote in a statement.

The store will replace Staples, which closed in October after opening in 2011.

According to its Facebook page, the former Bike Lane Brewing in Loudoun County has changed its name.

The brewery (101 Loudoun St. SE, Leesburg), which was challenged by The Bike Lane in Reston for having a similar name, will now be known as Bike TrAle Brewing. In addition, its scheduled opening date has been pushed back a week to Oct. 28 to accommodate for the change.

Earlier this month, the owners of The Bike Lane (11943 Democracy Drive) announced they would seek legal action to bar the brewery from using its originally planned name.

“We feel that having a business named so similar and located on the same trail (the W&OD), only a few miles away, will confuse both our current and future customers,” wrote co-owners Anne and Todd Mader in a letter to customers. “This company has refused to change their name, so we are left with no other option than to ask the courts to have them change their name.”

The brewery’s location is about 1/4-mile from where the W&OD Trail crosses King Street in Leesburg. Its Facebook page was updated Saturday announcing the name change.

The Bike Lane, which has announced it will soon leave Reston Town Center, plans to stay near the W&OD Trail in Reston when it moves. As part of the move, the Maders say, they will expand to include their own micro-brewery and coffee house. This further complicated matters with the new Leesburg brewery, they say.

Bike TrAle Brewing co-owner Greg Perlberg previously told Reston Now that The Bike Lane had been threatening his business with legal action for months, and that he was not “cordially asked” to change the name as the Maders asserted in their letter.

Perlberg applied for a trademark to the name “Bike Lane Brewing” in July 2016. The Bike Lane, which also operates a shop in Springfield, is trademarked under the name Fairfax Cyclery Inc. t/a The Bike Lane.

Lake Anne Brew House, Reston’s only brewery, returned from the Great American Beer Festival, the world’s largest commercial beer competition in Denver, without any medals but plenty of high hopes for next year.

The brewery submitted two beers to the festival, which hosts more than 2,200 breweries with nearly 8,000 entries in 98 categories of competition. The contest, which is run by the Brewers Association, took place over three days and was judged by more than 250 beer experts from 13 countries, according to a release.

Competition was stiff this year, according to Melissa Romano, the brew house’s co-owner.

“We are extremely proud of our beers, and know that they showed well in competition. We’re looking forward to returning next year, with more entries and another shot at bringing [a] GABF gold home to Reston,” she said.

The business submitted its Lord Fairfax English Pale, which previously won an award in last year’s Virginia Beer Cup, and its Belgian Golden Strong Ale in two categories.

Other breweries in Virginia also struggled to bring medals home. The Dulles-based Ocelot Brewing Co. was the only local brewery to bring back a bronze medal in the state in the baltic porter category, according to Romano.

Romano said she was especially impressed by the collaboration between breweries in Loudoun and Fairfax counties. Several local businesses shipped beers for judging to Denver in a single shipment.

“It’s a pretty cool thing in an industry where we’re all competing together and yet we all ship together. A win for one is a win for all,” Romano said.

Since opening in April last year, Lake Anne Brew House has won several competitions, including three awards during the Virginia Craft Beer Cup in June, which is presented by the Virginia Craft Brewers Guild. Its Lord Fairfax EPA and Reston Red Ale were honored with second and third-place awards in the 2016 Craft Beer Cup, just months after the brew house opened last spring.

Next year, Romano said the brew house plans to submit more entries to increase chances of a win.

“We all had a great time for sure. It was just fun to be there with brew houses from all over the country and learn from each other. We hope to bring back a gold for Reston next year,” she said.

As the owners of The Bike Lane prepare to leave Reston Town Center for a new location in the community, they have another issue weighing on their minds as well.

The bike shop has had its feathers ruffled by a new Loudoun County brewery with a similar name. According to its Facebook page, Bike Lane Brewing plans to open Oct. 21 at 101 Loudoun St. SE in Leesburg, about 1/4-mile from where the W&OD Trail crosses King Street in the town.

In a letter emailed to customers Thursday and posted to Facebook today, The Bike Lane owners Anne and Todd Mader say they are in no way affiliated with the brewery and are taking legal measures to clear up the issue.

We learned that this company was planning to open about five months ago. Since that time, we have cordially asked them, numerous times, to change their name. We feel that having a business named so similar and located on the same trail (the W&OD), only a few miles away, will confuse both our current and future customers. This company has refused to change their name, so we are left with no other option than to ask the courts to have them change their name.

When reached by Reston Now for comment, Bike Lane Brewing co-owner Greg Perlberg challenged the assertion in the statement from The Bike Lane that they have “cordially asked” him to change the name of his business.

“We have only had legal contact with them regarding this,” he said.

He declined further comment, citing advice from his attorney.

In its letter to customers, The Bike Lane says it plans to stay near the W&OD Trail in Reston when it leaves RTC. As part of the move, the Maders say, they will expand to include their own micro-brewery and coffee house. This further complicates matters with the new Leesburg brewery, they say.

With all of this, we feel it is extremely important that we protect our brand and name. As you can imagine, having a brewery with the same name will not only confuse customers but it will likely distract from both of our businesses. The last thing Todd and I want is to get in the way of another businesses [sic] success. We are very supportive of this company opening a new brewery, and we wish them all the best in their new venture. We are only asking them to change their name before they open for business to protect the investment we have made in The Bike Lane brand and to protect you, our customers, from being confused.

The Bike Lane has been in its current location, at 11943 Democracy Drive, for nearly a decade. It also operates a shop in Springfield.

Local restaurants will offer up their favorite fall menus on Saturday during Flavors of Fall, a free annual festival that includes live entertainment, dancing and family activities at Reston Town Center. Admission is free.

The outdoor festival, formerly known as Reston Oktoberfest and run by the Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce, will take place from noon to 11 p.m.

New to the festival this year is a cornhole tournament, which will feature regional teams who will compete for prizes, including travel and weekend getaway packages. Another addition this year is a craft beer and VIP lounge, where attendees can purchase tickets to experience 18 different craft beers.

Confirmed restaurants include Barcelona Wine Bar, Choolaah Indian Barbecue, Clyde’s of Reston, GreenFare, The Melting Pot, Mom’s Momo, Pittsburgh Rick’s and Tavern 64 Regional Kitchen.

SLHS Leadership will be collecting funds for Hurricane Harvey relief.
• Get ready to run in the Reston Pumpkin 5K and Kids Pumpkin Dash on Sunday at 8:15 a.m. in the Reston Town Center (11921 Freedom Drive). Participants are encouraged to debut their Halloween costumes.
• Join the Greater Reston Arts Center as it says goodbye to “A Bird in the Hand,” a wooden, nest-like sculpture in Reston Town Square Park (11990 Market St.), Saturday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
• Watch the “Amazing Acro-cats,” a troupe of performing house cats, at NextStop Theatre Company (269 Sunset Park Drive) as they complete tricks through the magic of clicker training. Shows run on Saturday at 4 and 7 p.m., on Sunday at 1 and 4 p.m., and on Monday at 1 p.m. Purchase tickets online here.
• “Sue Wrbican: Well Past the Echo” will be on view at Greater Reston Arts Center (12001 Market St.) through Nov. 18.
• Meet author Maya Corrigan on Saturday from 6 – 7 p.m. in Scrawl Books (11862 Market St.) as she talks about Edgar Allen Poe and her book “The Tell-Tale Tarte.”
• The Reston Farmers Market will take place from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Lake Anne Village Center.
• During “Giraffe-toberfest,” celebrate fall with animals at Roer’s Zoofari (1228 Hunter Mill Road) on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Visitors can meet the zoo’s giraffe “Waffles.” Tickets are $20 and all proceeds will support giraffe conservation.
• Kids can create a healthy snack with food from Kidwell Farm (2739 West Ox Road) at Frying Pan Park. One-hour sessions in the “Kids Can Cook!” program begin at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. The cost is $7 per child. An adult must attend class with the child.
• Watch Mucca Pazza as they combine marching band traditions and street theater spectacles on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Reston Community Center (2310 Colts Neck Road). Tickets are $20 for Reston residents and $30 for all other residents.
• Many restaurants and bars in Reston will have live music this weekend. Lake Anne Plaza is going to get colorful this weekend, and you can be a part of it.

Reston Art Gallery & Studios is hosting “Painting on the Plaza” from 4-6 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. According to an event information on Lake Anne Plaza’s website:

“Experience the beauty and vibrancy of the Lake Anne Community as the Plaza comes alive with artists painting en plein air. Join in the fun by painting or watching the artists as they work. Purchase an original artwork to take home. And while you’re at Lake Anne, don’t forget to vote for your favorite painting and enter the drawings for door prizes. Winners will be announced on Sunday at 5:30. The event will be held rain or shine.”

It’s the end-of-summer party known as Labor Day Weekend. Over the next three-plus days, there will be plenty of chances to get out and give summer its well-deserved sendoff.

There are several marquee events in the area this weekend, beginning with the kickoff of the JamBrew series tonight in Herndon. Aslin Beer Co. will be pouring frosty mugs, Weird Brothers Coffee will be offering tasty drinks, Lake Anne Brew House/Nordic Knot Pretzels “will be vending fresh baked soft pretzels to the masses,” and there will be much more. Live music will be offered from DJ Cihad, Todd Wright and Tammy Gann, and Turtle Recall. The free event is slated for 6-10 p.m. at the Herndon Town Green (777 Lynn St.).

Over at Lake Anne Plaza, the 11th annual Lake Anne Jazz & Blues Festival will go down from 1-9 p.m. Saturday. The lineup of musicians for the festival includes many well-known names in the local music community. The eight hours of music will include performances by Cheick Hamala Dibaté, Sam Gunderson, John Lee & Michael Pavone, Integriti Reeves, Mykle Lyons (sextet), Gigi MacClaughlin, Kriss Funn and Crush Funk Brass.

On Monday in Herndon, the town’s annual Labor Day Festival will feature Virginia wine tastings, craft beers, live music, a craft show, food vendors, lawn games and more. Eight craft brewers will offer tastings, and eight wineries are participating as well. There will also be live music throughout the event and much more. Admission for those participating in sampling wine and beer will be $20, which includes a glass for wine and three complimentary beer tastings. Anyone who won’t be purchasing alcoholic beverages will be admitted for $5, and children 12 and under will be admitted free. The event is slated for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Herndon Town Green (777 Lynn St.).

The weekend weather forecast calls for a chance of rain Saturday, a partly sunny day Sunday and then a gorgeous Labor Day holiday. Get out there and make the most of it!

• Surf Reston is offering the chance to paddleboard to the sounds of the Lake Anne Jazz & Blues Festival from 1-3 p.m. Saturday. Advance registration is required. In addition, there will be SUP yoga from 9-11 a.m. Saturday.
• Unitarian Universalist Church (1625 Wiehle Ave.) will show the film “A Five-Star Life” tonight beginning at 8:30 p.m., preceded at 8 p.m. by a social and snack opportunity.
• Many restaurants and bars in Reston will have live music this weekend. These include: Vinifera Wine Bar and Bistro (11750 Sunrise Valley Drive) from 7-10 p.m every Friday and Saturday night; Crafthouse (1888 Explorer St.) every Friday and Saturday night from 10 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.; and Tavern64 (1800 Presidents St.) every Friday from 6-10 p.m.
• Crafthouse (1888 Explorer St.) will also have a pregame party Sunday in anticipation of that evening’s college football game between Virginia Tech and West Virginia at FedExField. The restaurant will also charter a bus to the game, leaving at 3:30 p.m., with tickets starting at $29.99. (Note: That price only includes the ride and the party, not tickets to the game itself.)
• Kalypso’s Sports Tavern (1617 Washington Plaza N.) will have live music from Olivia & The Mates tonight from 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m.; and from Sam Gunderson during those hours Saturday night.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks will be provided by Casero Creations, Island Smoothie, Guapo’s, The Tender Rib and Zabb Thai Restaurant.

Tremendous growth threatened Aslin Beer Company‘s future in Herndon, but it has found a new home that will allow it to stay.

The two-year-old brewery will open a new tasting room and bar at 771 Elden St., the former home of Napa Auto Parts, later this year. The new location will feature about 2,500 square feet of interior tasting room space and another 2,500 square feet of outdoor space — including a rooftop deck and bar, bocce ball court, and covered deck.

Kai Leszkowicz, one of Aslin’s co-founders, said they hope to get the new space opened by December, and plan to be open seven days a week.

“It’s basically a project that we started two years ago and have been following through, and now it’s coming to fruition,” Leszkowicz said.

In December 2016, Aslin said that it would be forced to leave the Town of Herndon due to the limitations of its current space at 257 Sunset Park Drive. That location now only offers beer in a “to-go” format, with a handful of new releases dropping each Thursday and sold by the four-pack. For example, today at 3 p.m. it will be offering sales of its Cortes & His Men IPA, Laser Raptors double IPA, How Now Brown Cow milk stout and There Gose The Diet gose.

Mayor Lisa Merkel said that the need to limit operations at the Sunset Park Drive location was due to a ruling by the county’s fire marshal, which occurred because of Aslin’s “incredible success that has resulted in … outgrowing their current location much more quickly than anticipated.”

“Aslin Beer Company is exactly the kind of business Herndon would like to continue to attract,” Merkel said at the time.

Anne Papa Curtis, communications officer for the Town of Herndon, said Thursday that the Town “is excited to welcome Aslin Beer Company into the downtown, and we are working with them to complete town zoning approval processes.”

In a Facebook post earlier this week, the brewery said the new space on Elden Street will “provide a unique environment that encompasses our brand and represents our team.”

Aslin will be holding its second anniversary party Saturday, Sept. 16 in the parking lot of the future tasting room, according to the Facebook post. It plans to keep its current space for production only, it says, while also looking for a new production facility.
