April is here and the springtime festivities are right around the corner.

There is always a lot to do in Reston and the surrounding area, and this weekend is no exception. Kids and adults alike have plenty of options for fun as we welcome the calendar’s fourth month.

Here are just some ideas for what to do in the Reston area this weekend:

• Reston Community Center’s annual “Eggnormous” Easter egg hunt is Saturday from 10-11:30 a.m. at Lake Fairfax Park (1400 Lake Fairfax Way). The free event is sure to be a big hit for all the kids. For more information, visit the Reston Community Center website.
• Also at Lake Fairfax Park on Saturday, volunteers are sought to help clean up the watershed. The event, one of nine at parks around the county, is set for 9-11:30 a.m.
• Dogs will be the guests of honor Saturday during the “Wag Fest” celebration in Reston. The event, set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., will be at the North County Governmental Center (1801 Cameron Glen Drive).
• The last two performances of Reston Community Players’ “Rock of Ages” will be tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m. at CenterStage (2310 Colts Neck Road). Tickets for each performance of the show are $25.
• Reston Town Center will be host to an MS Walk on Sunday beginning at 9 a.m., with registration starting at 8.
• The annual April Fool’s Day prank at Reston Town Center will be taking place all-day Saturday at Fountain Square.
• Other events at Reston Town Center this weekend include the Rings for Spring bridal event, Easter egg decorating at Williams-Sonoma, kids’ cooking class at Il Fornaio and more.
• The A Bridal Show will also be taking place in Reston this weekend, Sunday at the Bechtel Conference Center (1801 Alexander Bell Drive).
• The Tidewater Guitar Quartet will play Sunday at 4 p.m. at ArtSpace Herndon (750 Center St.). Tickets are $20.
• The children’s book sale at Reston Regional Library (11925 Bowman Towne Drive) will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday.
• The Friends of Reston’s Environmental Film Series will show “Hometown Habitat” tonight from 7-9 p.m. at Walker Nature Center (11450 Glade Drive).
• Kalypso’s (1617 Washington Plaza N.) will have live music tonight, 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., from Innertwined. DJ Kram will play Top 40 hits Saturday night.

It’s the first weekend of spring and the weather forecast is looking fantastic. Here are some ideas for how you can get out and enjoy yourself.

• Reston Association has an “open house” event slated for Sunday from 2-4 p.m. at The Lake House (11450 Baron Cameron Ave.). Members are invited to come find out more about what RA has to offer.
• Islamic Relief USA’s “Skate for Syria” is tonight from 7:30-9:30 p.m. at SkateQuest (1800 Michael Faraday Court). Tickets are available online for $12; they will be $15 at the door. Proceeds from the fundraiser support Syrian Humanitarian Aid.
• Reston Town Center is hosting “Family Fun Saturdays” throughout March to benefit Opportunity Neighborhood: Reston. This week’s schedule features mini train rides, caricature and balloon artists, free “sweet treats” and more. The event will go from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday.
• Other events at Reston Town Center this weekend include an art workshop at Greater Reston Arts Center, a cooking class at Il Fornaio, cupcake-making demonstrations at Williams-Sonoma and live music at World of Beer.
• ArtSpace Herndon (750 Center St.) will host its Best of FAVS showcase from 7-9:30 p.m. tonight. The event showcases several films from George Mason University’s Film and Video Studies program. There will be a question-and-answer session with the filmmakers as well. Tickets are $20.
• There will be a community rummage sale Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Berthold Academy (11480 Sunset Hills Road). Proceeds from the event will go toward class trips for students.
• Reston Community Players’ will put on “Rock of Ages” tonight and Saturday at 8 p.m., as well as Sunday at 2 p.m. at CenterStage (2310 Colts Neck Road). Tickets for each performance of the show, which will run through April 1, are $25.
• Scrawl Books (11862 Market St.) will host storytime with author Anne Marie Stephens on Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
• The Diva Central prom dress giveaway will be Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. at the Lake Anne location (1609A Washington Plaza N.) of Reston Community Center. The giveaway is open to any current middle school and high school student who is in need of a formal dress, shoes, jewelry and other accessories.
• An all-ages nature workshop involving spring bulb containers will happen at Walker Nature Center (11450 Glade Drive) from 2-3 p.m. Sunday. Cost is $7 for RA members and $9 for non-members.
• The Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra of Greater Washington will present its Suite Serenade at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at United Christian Parish (11508 North Shore Drive).
• There will be a free Montessori music class and information session at Herndon Community Center (814 Ferndale Ave.) from 6-8 p.m. Sunday. Parents are invited to learn about Little Oaks Montessori Academy.
• Reston Regional Library (11925 Bowman Towne Drive) will have its YA Book Club on Sunday at 2 p.m.
• Kalypso’s (1617 Washington Plaza N.) will have live music tonight, 9:30 p.m. to 1:30 a.m., from Throwing Plates. DJ Kram will play Top 40 hits Saturday night.

Still Waiting for Willard’s — We reported in January that Willard’s BBQ would soon open at 11790 Baron Cameron Ave., in the Home Depot Shopping Center. On its Facebook page, the restaurant later said it was aiming for a March 14 opening. In a response to a follower’s question Tuesday, though, it now says it hopes to open by the “end of this month.” [Willard’s BBQ]

Young Professionals Event Slated for Brewery — The Greater Reston Chamber of Commerce will host an event Thursday from 5:30-7:30 p.m. to celebrate the ribbon cutting of Crooked Run Brewing (22455 Davis Drive, Sterling). Reston-Based Company Sold — ObjectVideo, which develops video analytics software for automated security surveillance systems, is headquartered at 11600 Sunrise Valley Drive. The 19-year-old company, whose work has been widely used by the U.S. defense and intelligence communities, has been acquired by Tysons-based Alarm.com. [Washington Business Journal]

‘Rock of Ages’ Gets Good Review — Reston Community Players’ performance of “Rock of Ages” opened last weekend at CenterStage (2310 Colts Neck Road) and will play through April 1. A review says Chris Dore’s “sexy, fun” choreography does an excellent job “showcas[ing] very talented dancing in the ensemble.” Carole Steele’s costumes are said to be “transformative and appropriately gaudy” for the ’80s theme. Reston Community Players’ performance of “Gypsy” took home five honors Sunday night at the annual Washington Area Community Theatre Honors (WATCH) awards ceremony.

In addition to the awards won by “Gypsy,” the Community Players were also recognized with an award for their performance of “Mary Poppins” to bring their total number of wins for the 2016 season to six.

Reston Community Players will bring rock ‘n’ roll to life next month, as “Rock of Ages” comes to the stage.

The show, a celebration of rock bands with big guitar solos and bigger hair, will hit Reston on March 10. It features songs from Styx, Whitesnake, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister and more favorites from the ’80s.

“It is a privilege to direct the very talented cast of singers, dancers and actors in ‘Rock of Ages,'” said Joshua Redford, director of the production. “This is a show unlike any other.”

The musical is the story of Drew and Sherrie, an aspiring rock star and an aspiring actress, who try to prevent developers from turning the Sunset Strip into a strip mall.

Reston Community Players will have their productions all over the annual Washington Area Theatre Community Honors awards in March.

The troupe’s productions received 23 total nominations for the 2016 season, second-most among the 27 participating theater companies. Only the Little Theatre of Alexandria (26) received more.

Among the nominations are 17 for the Community Players’ performance of “Gypsy” last fall. The group also received five nominations for its performance of “Mary Poppins” (February-March) and one for its staging of “Master Class” (January).

Paul Tonden, artistic director, said the Community Players are humbled by and grateful for the recognition.

Police Seek Person Who Shot at Cruiser — Someone shot at a police car last night on Georgetown Pike, and law enforcement is seeking the culprit. The incident happened around midnight in the area of Walker Road. The suspect’s vehicle may have been a white Toyota or Mazda from the late 1990s or early 2000s, with black molding on the doors. Herndon Family of Six Displaced By House Fire — Fire officials say a passerby alerted a Herndon family to a fire in their Van Buren Street home Friday afternoon. Apparently, the home’s smoke detectors were not equipped with batteries. The fire, the source of which was electrical, caused almost $70,000 in damage. [Fairfax County Fire and Rescue]

Reston Community Players Show Has Successful Opening — “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike” opened Friday on the CenterStage at the Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods (2310 Colts Neck Road). The Reston Community Players are setting the stage to present their latest production, the Tony Award-winning play “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike.”

The show opens Friday, Jan. 20 and runs through Saturday, Feb. 4. Performances are scheduled to take place on the CenterStage at the Reston Community Center at Hunters Woods (2310 Colts Neck Road).

The play, written by Christopher Durang, centers around Vanya and Sonia, middle-aged siblings who live happily together in rural Pennsylvania. But when their other sister, a B-list Hollywood star named Masha, shows up unexpectedly with her latest boyfriend, Spike, she tries to draw them into a kooky plan that inevitably upends their previously quiet life.

The modern comedy is based upon a 19th-century Russian play, “Uncle Vanya” by Anton Chekhov. In his play, Durang takes the classic tale and weaves it into a work of American pop culture that aims to bring laughter from audiences of all ages.

The cast of the Reston production includes Andrew JM Regiec as Vanya, Lee Slivka as Sonia, Joanne Maylone as Masha and Will MacLeod as Spike. The production is directed by Tel Monks, and it is produced by Bea and Jerry Morse.

The Reston Community Players open their 50th season this weekend with the classic musical Gypsy.

Gypsy is based on the memoirs of famous burlesque artist Gypsy Rose Lee, and focuses on her mother Rose — the ultimate stage mom.

Theatre critic Clive Barnes once described the character of Rose as “one of the few truly complex characters in the American musical.”

The multi-Tony Award winning musical, first staged in the 1950s, has music by Jule Styne, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Arthur Laurents.

The Reston Community Players are celebrating their 50th anniversary season with a gala at Hidden Creek Country Club on Sept. 23.

RCP — formerly the Reston Players — have been entertaining local audiences since 1966 with four productions a year.

Patrons of the arts are invited to come honor the program at the Black Tie Optional gala.

The Reston Community Players’ new production of the whodunit Rehearsal for Murder opens Friday at Reston Community’s Center’s CenterStage.

Rehearsal for Murder is the story of Alex Dennison, a successful playwright who, one year earlier, lost his fiancé, Monica Wells, a movie-star turned Broadway leading lady, in what police ruled as a suicide. Convinced it was actually murder, Dennison invites five acquaintances from the original production to read scenes from his new play. These scenes reveal surprising connections to the original death.

The play is produced by Jay Stein, who also plays Lloyd Andrews, the director of Alex Dennison’s ill-fated play, Chamber Music.

“The most interesting thing about being in a whodunit is being part of the process of confounding the audience, yet also knowing there are enough clues for them to figure it out if they are paying attention,” Stein said in a release.

Rehearsal for Murder is directed by Jessie Roberts. Producers are Jocelyn Steiner and Jay Stein. Rehearsal for Murder is based upon the teleplay by Richard Levinson and William Link for the 1982 film featuring Robert Preston and Lynn Redgrave.

Rehearsal for Murder runs weekends, Jan. 16-31, 2015. All performances are at 8 p.m. with the exception of a 2 p.m. matinee on Jan. 25.

A family friendly theater production deserves some family friendly activities.

That is why the Reston Community Players have added meet-and-greet sessions with the characters of You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown after matinee performances on Sundays, Oct. 26 and Nov. 2.

The play opened last week at Reston Community Center’s CenterStage.

The musical You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown was created in 1967, at the height of the Charles Schulz’s Peanuts comic’s popularity. Decades later, Charlie Brown’s angst, Snoopy’s imagination and Linus’ optimism.

“Director Rich Bird has blown each one Schulz’s indelible characters into a nicely kindled flame with this delightful production, which features great casting (the characters look like their cartoon counterparts), and great direction and choreography,”  Yvonne French of DC Metro Theatre Arts wrote in a review.

The cast features Richard Farella as Charlie Brown, Alana Sharp as Lucy, Nina Jankowicz as Sally, Patrick Graham as Linus, Eric Hughes as Schroeder, and Terry Barr as Snoopy. Laura Baughman is the producer. and Richard Bird is the director. Music direction is by Mark V. Deal.

You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown runs Friday, Saturdays and Sundays through Nov. 8. All performances are at 8 p.m., with matinees at 2 p.m. on Oct. 26 ad Nov. 2.
