Wolf Antoni, left, and family/Credit: Go Fund Me For four years, Reston’s Wolf Antoni has cooked up bratwurst, wiener schnitzel and other favorites from his native Austria from his food truck, The Bratwurst King.

But run of bad luck this year has put the business in jeopardy, Antoni says. The truck is the main source of income for Antoni and his wife and child. After a job loss and an injury, the family has drained its reserves. It is trying to find the money to replace the broken truck engine (about $15,000) and resume Bratwurst King operations.

The Bratwurst King is often parked among the food trucks on Business Center Drive weekdays in Reston, as well as at local fairs, festivals and other special events.

“We love to cook for you and are enjoying the smiles we are putting on your faces,” Antoni said on his Go Fund Me page. “Sadly, we are at a point, where we cannot go on without some major help from you. “

The Bratwurst King Truck/Bratwurst King via FacebookWhile everyone  experiences tough luck from time to time, we have certainly had our share. We can handle the grief of coping with some personal tragedies in our life, we just can’t handle the bills that are stacking up, regardless if we are on the road or not.”

As of Tuesday, just over $4,000 had been donated to the cause.

Antoni said those who make donations will get something in return. Once the truck is up and running, a $15 donation will get you a free meal and drink (bring proof of donation). For a $50 donation (or multiples), contributors will get a meal, a Bratwurst King T-shirt and a Bratwurst King mug. Donations of $500 and $1,000 get your catering for a private parties.

Tetra buildingTetra Partners, the Reston-based commercial real estate firm, has a new name and a new location as Reston Association prepares to take over Tetra’s former offices at 11450 Baron Cameron Drive.

Tetra will now be called Lauer Commercial, named for Tetra founder Bill Lauer, and will be located at 1899 Preston White Drive in Reston.

The building, formerly the Reston Visitors Center used by developers as a sales office from 1983 to 2003, was purchased by Tetra in 2003 and used as its offices since.

Tetra sold the building, which sits on 3.47 acres overlooking Lake Newport, to Reston Association for $2.65 million this year. After several contentious community meetings and a member referendum, the sale closed in late July.

RA plans to renovate the building and use it for community and event rental space. It will likely be renamed as Comstock Partners earned 10 years of naming rights in a development agreement with RA. Comstock is giving RA $650,000 as part of a deal that adds BLVD Apartments at Reston Station to the association.

As part of the sales agreement, Tetra is renting back the property from RA through the end of 2015 at $8,098 per month. Even though Lauer Commercial is publicizing a new address, it is still bound by contract to pay for the old space through Dec. 31, said RA spokesman Mike Leone. Lauer Commercial reps did not return messages.

RA is in the process of forming a working group made up of various community members. The group will formulate plans for the building’s use. RA CEO Cate Fulkerson has said the association expects RA programming the the building by spring 2016.

Andy Lauer, Bill Lauer’s son and a principal at Lauer Commercial, said in an email to clients he is renaming the firm to honor his father’s legacy. Bill Lauer, a longtime Reston resident who was active in many nonprofits and community groups, died suddenly in May.

Fairfax County Fire RescueA charcoal grill left too close to combustibles on an outdoor deck caused a fire to a townhouse on Hemingway Drive in Reston early Sunday.

Fairfax County Fire Rescue were called to the house at 11536 Hemingway at about 1:40 a.m.

Firefighters encountered smoke and fire coming from all levels of a middle unit, three-story townhouse upon arrival. Firefighters conducted an aggressive exterior and interior fire attack and brought the fire under control in approximately 20 minutes.

Fire Rescue officials said occupants from several nearby townhouses all escaped without injuries. Two occupants have been displaced and are receiving Red Cross support.

Smoke alarms did not activate as the fire started on the exterior. The accidential blaze caused $232,000 in damage, fire officials said.

Fairfax County Fire Rescue says to keep these safety tips in mind to prevent a grill fire:

  • Grills should be placed at least 15 feet from any home, building, or combustibles to ensure adequate air circulation.
  • Charcoal must be kept dry. Spare propane bottles should be stored outside away from the home. A backyard shed is a good place.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill. Grills continue to give off heat long after cooking has stopped.
  • Never place hot ashes in paper or plastic bags or containers. Only use metal containers for hot ashes.
  • Use Underwriters Laboratories (UL) approved electrical starters in place of lighter fluid.
  • Never use a grill on apartment or condominium balconies. This practice is one of the biggest dangers with grills. It is unsafe and against the law.

lakeannecoffeehouse logoLake Anne Coffee House will change ownership next week and will be mostly closed for renovations into November, new co-owner Eve Thompson said.

Thompson and her husband, Rick, purchased the coffee house in July. The Thompsons are longtime Lake Anne residents.

The coffee house had been on the market for more than a year as the former owners looked toward retirement.

Thompson says that beginning Sept. 12, the coffee house patio will be open on Saturday mornings during the Reston Farmers Market and Craft Market. Residents can try new coffee blends from Manassas-based Monument Coffee Roasters and pastries from Sterling’s Baguette Republic. On Sept. 12, the shop will be giving away free samples.

The Thompsons are working with a Reston-based architect and interior designer to remodel the shop from top to bottom — and also support local businesses. (Editor’s note: Eve Thompson’s other business, Reston Real Estate, is a Reston Now sponsor)

“It is our goal to goal to use as much locally sourced products as possible,” said Eve Thompson. She also hopes to use many organic products.

There’s a new restaurant coming to the former location of Macaroni Grill at 1845 Fountain Drive in Reston.

Not Your Average Joe’s, a Massachusetts-based restaurant chain, has signed a lease for the location and has filed permits for renovations.

Not Your Average Joe’s has 20 locations in New England, as well as in Bethesda, Gaithersburg, Leesburg and Woodbridge.

Not Your Average Joe’s is known for stone-hearth pizzas, salads, unique burger combos and other casual fare. See menu on the company website.

The Macaroni Grill closed fairly suddenly in December. The Spectrum shopping center where it was located is expected to undergo a massive redevelopment, but that may not begin for several years.
