A new restaurant has signed a lease and is seeking permits for space at Hunters Woods Village Center.

King Pollo, a local Peruvian chicken chainlet, is renovating space at 2254G Hunters Woods Plaza, according to Fairfax County records.

King Pollo also has stores in Woodbridge, Alexandria, Sterling, Chantilly and Silver Spring.

The restaurant specializes in Peruvian-style wood charcoal broiled chicken. Chicken meals come with sides, including yuca, plantains, vegetables and fries. There are other South American specialities too, including beef and pork dishes and pupusas. See the menu on King Pollo’s website.

No opening date has been announced. Also, two other restaurants that signed leases for space at Hunters Woods in recent years never opened. Chinto’s Burritos was scheduled to open in 2014, but scrapped plans due to financing issues.

A Pho restaurant signed a lease for the former Cold Spoon frozen yogurt spot in September 2015. However, work has not begun and a sign on the window says the space is still for rent.

The locally owned store had operated at Hunters Woods since March of 2014, part of a wave of self-serve frozen yogurt stores that popped up around Reston.

Several of them have come and gone in the last few years, including Yogiberry at Reston Town Center and South Lakes Village Center. Remaining are Iceberry at Reston Town Center and Sweetfrog at Northpoint Village Center.

A new Pho restaurant, Pho 88, is slated to open in the Cold Spoon space at 2312 Hunters Woods, Reston Now previously reported.

Jersey Mike’s Subs will open in Reston on Wednesday.

To mark the grand opening, the owners of the new location of the sub shop at 2254 Hunters Woods Village Center (former location of Dairy Queen) will hold a fundraiser to help support three neighborhood schools.

Franchise owners Greg Switaj and Brian Deeth said they are circulating 10,000 coupons in the community offering a free sub for a minimum of $2 contribution that will go to Dogwood and Terraset Elementary Schools and Langston Hughes Middle School.

Customers must have a coupon to be eligible. The promotion will run Oct. 28 through Nov. 1.

“Greg and I are excited to open in the Reston community,” Deeth said in a release. “We have been around for five years and as we continue to grow as a company we are able to open in communities that we have been looking forward to opening in. By supporting the local schools we are able to support families from different parts of the community and support kids who may one day work for us here in the store.”

Jersey Mike’s locations nationwide have have raised nearly $13 million since 2010 for worthy local charities and have distributed more than one million free sub sandwiches to help numerous causes.

The Hunters Woods location will be open 10 a.m. to 9 p.m., seven days a week.

Reston is getting another Asian restaurant. Local owners have filed permits to open Pho 88 Reston at 2312 Hunters Woods Village Center.

That location is currently the address of Cold Spoon frozen yogurt. Cold Spoon has occupied the space since March of 2014. A Cold Spoon  employee could not confirm whether the yogurt shop was permanently closing.

Reston has only one other Vietnamese restaurant: Pho Reston 75 at Tall Oaks Village Center.

Pho is traditional Vietnamese noodle soup with variations on additions such as beef, chicken, pork and vegetables.

The last two springs, Fairfax County Police listened to residents’ concerns about the dark stretch of path that runs behind Hunters Woods Village Center and is often a site for crime such as assault and drug activity.

Police said at a 2014 community meeting that plans were in the works to improve lighting and that Reston Association — which owns the stretch of path — would pay for it.

At a 2015 meeting, Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins and FCPD Reston Station assistant commander Lance Schiable both addressed concerns about Reston’s overall lack of lighting, even though Reston was planned that way.

“With Metro here now, we have more people walking and riding bikes in Reston, and they want to do it at night,” Hudgins said. “We need to figure out how to make it safer for them. It is very dark here in Reston.”

Reston Association said in 2013 it had set aside $125,000 for the lighting project. It’s more than halfway through 2015, though, and there are no new lights. What happened?

Like many aspects of life in Fairfax County, the costs went up, RA says.

What was expected to cost RA $125,000 grew to an estimated $190,000, RA CEO Cate Fulkerson said last December. While the $125,000 carried over to the current budget, the costs grew even more.

“The actual total cost is closer to $300,000,” Fulkerson told Reston Now in December. “We have not installed pathway lighting in many years, and the original estimate used in building the 2014/2015 Capital Budgets did not account for expenses related to Dominion Power’s engineering and equipment costs, which have increased considerably since the last time the Association installed pathways lighting.”

RA is hoping that Edens, which owns Hunters Woods, will pick up a significant share of the costs. Edens reps did not return messages.

Meanwhile, RA may increase the scope of the project to improve lighting at other areas in need, not just at Hunters Woods, RA spokesman Mike Leone said. RA’s Design Review Board told RA earlier this year it wanted a comprehensive lighting guideline for the whole community.

“We set aside the money in the 2014 budget, but what has happened has become kind of a bigger project,” he said. “When RA started working with Dominion, it got more expensive, based on the police recommendation. But what also started to happen, is we started getting input from Shadowood and other [nearby] condos wanting better lighting in their area.”

Leone said what started as a one stretch of path has now turned into a “urban design guidelines that would include a pedestrian lighting plan for the community.”

Leone says RA will “engage a lighting consultant to help develop that plan, as well as look at the safety of paths and the issue of light pollution while engaging the community in the process.”

He said it is a multiyear project and the costs are not yet known.

“Once that lighting design plan is developed by a consultant, then would go to RA board and the Design Review Board to develop a comprehensive lighting plan for the whole community,” Leone said.

Leone said RA is still hoping Edens will pay for some of the lighting upgrades near Hunters Woods.

Hunters’ Woods Village Center is getting a new tenant. Jersey’s Mikes subs has signed a lease and filed permits for renovations at 2304 Hunters Woods Plaza.

Jersey Mike’s is a national restaurant franchise with more than 1,500 stores, including locations nearby locations Chantilly, Fairfax and Sterling.

One of the newest stores opened this week in Vienna, where the owners held a fundraiser, as most Jersey Mike’s do as a grand opening party. The Vienna party benefitted the Semper Fi Fund, which helps injured members of the armed forces.

No opening date has been announced.

Fairfax County Police said that the string of car break-ins along Glade Drive near Hunters Woods Village Center has abated in the last several weeks.

Speaking at a community meeting at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods on Thursday, Lt. Lance Schaible said there were 20 larcenies in the area in April and only four in May.

Police said they recently arrested two adults on stolen credit card charges. Since those two suspects entered custody, nearby larceny incidents have also plummeted, they said.

While those suspects were adults, car break-ins are most often crimes of opportunity committed by teenagers, Schaible said.

“Larcenies generally occur in areas where lots of people (and cars) are close together,” he said. “It occurs near all shopping centers in Reston. Those are also areas with a quick getaway.”

Occasionally, suspects will break windows to get at something of value, such as a phone or a laptop case, police said. But in most instances, they will just go down a row of cars trying to see if any are unlocked.

Police said citizens should double check that car doors are locked. They said a surprising number of people think they have locked the car doors, but in the hurry to get bags, kids and other things into the house, they often have not locked.

They also reminded people to never leave valuables in the car. Even if you are running into your house for a minute, always take your purse, phone, work bag and other valuables.

One resident in attendance asked officers if Metro’s Silver Line is to blame for any crime increase in the area.

Schaible said that has not been proven “because Metro is here but there is nothing around it.” Crime tends to be where people congregate, he added.

However, as development and population continues to grow around Reston’s eventual two Metro stations, staffing and policing needs will be reassessed, Hunter Mill Supervisor Cathy Hudgins said.

“The station is going to be strained,” she said. “It is a fact we are going to need staff.”

Officers from Fairfax County Police’s Reston District Station will be on hand to address crime concerns in the Hunters Woods area at a community meeting on Thursday.

The meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at Reston Community Center Hunters Woods.

Crime Prevention officer Katy Defoe said the meeting was organized to address the rash of thefts from automobiles along Glade Drive, however officers will address any area crime questions.

Police held similar meetings in the spring of 2013 and 2014. At last year’s meeting, officers said they would increase visible police presence at Hunters Woods Village Center, particularly on foot and by bike. Defoe says that has had somewhat of an impact in crime awareness.

However, two recent robberies at the village center have some people on edge. On April 15, a woman was the victim of attempted robbery at knifepoint in daylight. On May 2, there was a robbery and assault at 8:30 p.m.

In December, the SunTrust bank inside the Hunters Woods Safeway was robbed — part of a string of county robberies in which the suspect has since been arrested.

Last week, a man was killed at nearby Shadowood Condos when a robbery attempt ended in gunfire. The victim knew the suspects, and two have been arrested.

The Hunters Woods patrol area has somewhat higher crime than other neighborhoods in Reston, FCPD statistics show. But it does not rank the highest. The Reston Town Center/Reston Hospital patrol area had more property crimes and crimes against society in 2014.

Hunters Woods had 442 property crimes (robbery, larceny, burglary, etc.) and 83 crimes against society (drugs, weapons, prostitution) in 2014. Cumulative stats for 2015 are not yet available, but Defoe said they would be addressed at Thursday’s meeting.

Fairfax County Police are investigating a robbery that took place at Hunters Woods Village Center on Sunday evening.

Police said the victim was walking about 8:30 p.m. and was approached by two men.

The suspects assaulted the victim, took property and fled. The victim incurred non life-threatening injuries.

The suspects were described as two black males, police said.

Three weeks ago, four teens tried to rob a woman of her purse at knifepoint in broad daylight at Hunters Woods. It is not known if the incidents are related.

Four teens — including one with a knife — tried to rob a woman of her purse at Hunters Woods Village Center on Wednesday, Fairfax County Police said.

Police said the woman was walking in near 2310 Hunters Woods Plaza about 3:30 p.m. when the suspects attempted to rob her. A nearby citizen saw the fracas and attempted to help the woman.

One of the teens displayed a small knife and threatened the bystander before fleeing the area on foot. They did not obtain the victim’s purse, police said.

The suspects were described as black and in their teens, police said. Some of them had backpacks and one wore a black T-shirt and blue jeans. The victims did not require medical attention.

On Saturday, teenage suspects also tried to rob a cyclist on Soapstone Drive a few blocks from Hunters Woods.

Hunters Woods Village Center now has two side-by-side vacancies in its stand-alone building at 2280 Hunters Woods Plaza.

One of the storefronts has not been occupied since the building was converted from Hollywood Video several years ago. The other housed Unleashed by Petco from 2012 until that store closed in late January.

The never-leased space was intended to be a Chinito’s Burritos, but the owner of that restaurant backed out in summer 2014 after financing could not be secured.

The most recent check of county permits shows no new tenants headed for Hunters Woods.

Unleashed by Petco will close its doors at Hunters Woods Village Center on Jan. 24, store management said.

The speciality pet supply store opened in late 2012 in the renovated stand-alone building that used to house Hollywood Video.

Management said the store did not perform up to the company’s expectations at the Hunters Woods location. Watch for specials and sales as Jan. 24 gets closer.

The Unleashed store has lots of nearby competition, including Weber Pet Supermarket at Fox Mill, Pet Valu at South Lakes Village Center and a large PetSmart at The Spectrum. Also, PetMAC opened earlier this month at Lake Anne Plaza.

Fairfax County Police were called to Hunters Woods Village Center about 7:25 p.m. on Sunday after a citizen reported gunshots being fired.

Units arrived at the scene via ground as well as the Fairfax County Police helicopter, a police spokesman said.

Police investigated the scene and determined that someone had fired a pellet gun, which has a loud sound similar to a real gun, they said.

There were no injuries, so police quickly concluded their investigation.
