Lake Anne Plaza will host its first National Night Out block party Tuesday evening, one of several celebrations slated throughout the area.
The goal of National Night Out is to enhance the relationship between neighbors and law enforcement while celebrating a sense of community. Its intent is to provide an opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.
At Lake Anne Plaza, beginning at 4 p.m., National Night Out events will include kids’ activities, dance crews, a DJ and live music, food specials, a moon bounce, hula demos and more.

For the third straight year, the Hunters Woods Neighborhood Coalition will sponsor a midday National Night Out event, beginning at noon. Several other National Night Out events will take place in Reston, including an evening program at the Southgate Community Center.
In Herndon, National Night Out will be observed from 4:30-8:30 p.m., and HPD will begin by visiting the Harbor House. From there, two motorcades will visit 14 more neighborhoods throughout the town.
“This annual event is one of the highlights of year for the police department and another great opportunity to further enhance the our partnership with the community,” HPD says.
The Fairfax County Police Department will visit as many activities around the county as possible.
National Night Out was first observed in 1984. Thousands of communities across the United States, Canada and worldwide military bases participate in National Night Out each year.

This is a sponsored post from Becky’s Pet Care, a professional pet care service in Northern Virginia.
This week’s Reston Pet of the Week is Nico, now living in Reston after being brought up in Arizona.
Here is what his owner, Raj, had to say about him:
Meet Nico, a 10 ½-year-old Lhasa Apso, Miniature Poodle, Chihuahua and German Shepherd mix. You might take a look at Nico’s photos and wonder if this mix is possible, but he definitely has some German Shepherd in him. (In fact, he is 12.5 percent Alsatian according to a DNA test!)
Nico has led quite an uphill life. He was found as a little puppy running around on the streets of the Arizona-Mexico border. We saw him at the rescue shelter the day after he was brought in and adopted him immediately. He soon got accustomed to comfortable living. Everything was going great until after Nico turned 8, when his vet said that he needed to have neck surgery right away to remove fluid from his spine that was causing him a lot of pain whenever he moved. He was a very good boy through the difficult ordeal and came out healthier than ever!
Nico is now proud to call Reston his new home and is already enjoying the smells and sounds. His favorite activity — other than laying on the cool floor during the dog days of the Northern Virginia summer — is watching the golfers at Reston National.

Herndon High School’s Summer Grand are recreating Roald Dahl’s classic “Willy Wonka” this weekend at the school.
The show will be presented Friday and Saturday at 7:30 p.m.; with a 2 p.m. Sunday matinee. Tickets are $12 for each show. Prior to the Sunday show, there will be a “Chocolate Factory Tour” — for a cost of $3 — that will give children a chance to see what goes on behind the scenes of such a production. One adult per family can accompany their children at no additional charge.
According to the Herndon Drama website:
Join the Summer Grand cast and crew as they present Roald Dahl’s Willy Wonka, a marvelous musical that will unlock the gates of your imagination — and, perhaps, teach a lesson or two.
Appropriate for all ages, this celebrated classic offers an optional “chocolate factory” tour before Sunday’s performance. Interested families with children ages 3 to 12 should contact Renee Maxwell, [email protected], soonest, as tour space is limited.
The shows will be presented in the auditorium at Herndon High School (700 Bennett St.). For further information, call Rapheal Schklowsky, Herndon High School theater director, at 703-810-2341; or email [email protected].
