Reston’s last photo developing store will shut its doors on Jan. 30.

The owner of Fotoimage 1HR, which had been at 1436 North Point Village Center since 2003, says its lease it expiring and will close.

Just a few years ago, there were camera stores/processing centers at South Lakes Village Center and Plaza America, to name a few.

But with the popularity of camera phones, digital cameras and self-service photo kiosks at places like CVS and Target, storefront photo operations are becoming a thing of the past.

“This has been a hard business to be in the last few years,” said owner Tim Klement.

Meanwhile, everything in the store, which also has framing services, is on sale. Camera bags are $5, for instance. Frames are buy one, get one 50 percent off.

No word from North Point owner Lerner Enterprises whether a new tenant has been signed.

Not Your Average Joe’s, a local branch of a Boston-based franchise, remodeled the former Macaroni Grill space. Romano’s Macaroni Grill closed in December of 2014.

NYAJ will be open for lunch and dinner, and has an extensive menu featuring seafood, steaks, creative appetizers, salads, stone hearth pizzas, and burgers. The menu also features seasonal selections.

Some of the specialty dishes: ahi tuna wontons served with pickled ginger and wasabi aioli; red-wine braised short ribs; and sage pecan salmon with a sage pecan pesto, chipotle mashed sweet potatoes and roasted brussels sprouts. See the whole menu on NYAJ’s website.

NYAJ also features a large wine list and more than 20 beers on tap, including several local craft brews such as Devil’s Backbone Vienna Lager, Lost Rhino Faceplant IPA, and Flying Dog’s seasonal brew.

This week, Reston Now will highlight some of the most read-stories of 2015. At No. 4 is the closing of Reston Kabob.

Reston restaurants come and go pretty often.

But no business closing of 2015 had quite the readership and reaction like the one for Reston Kabob, which was located at the International Center shops for more than a dozen years.

Read the original story on Reston Now.

The family owned spot at 1844 Sunrise Valley Dr. had to close in late July due to the upcoming redevelopment of the shopping center.

The building was finally torn down this month, and the stretch along Sunrise Valley will be redeveloped by JBG Companies into a new mixed-use property. The owners of Reston Kabob say they may be interested in returning to Reston Heights, as the new development will be called, when it opens in a few years.

Meanwhile, the operate Grill Kabob at 905 Herndon Pkwy in Herndon.

Reston’s newest retail destination — Urban Pop at Reston Station — opened on Monday. The pop-up market is Comstock’s unique initiative where crafters and other businesses can try out a small retail space of their own without a big commitment.

And when Comstock says small, they mean small. Micro, even — about 100 square feet. But that is room enough for knitter Janice Everett, who was displaying her handmade scarves, gloves and hats in her space, called WitKnits, on Monday.

Everett, who lives in Reston and is a graphic designer by day, has been selling at farmers market and the online site Etsy. She said when she heard about Urban Pop, she thought it might be a great introduction to retail business.

About eight of the 9-by-10 glass booths are now open on the Reston Station plaza, hoping to attract Wiehle-Reston East commuters, visitors to the Wednesday afternoon farmers market and holiday shoppers looking for unique gifts.

Starting next year, Reston Station residents will also live just upstairs at Comstock’s BLVD apartments.

The Urban Pop leases are short-term, so vendors may change quickly, but for the holiday launch check out:

Cloud Terre

Co Co. Sala

Yinibini Baby

Pearl Fine Teas

WitKnits (Also featuring jewelry from UrbanJule)

Arthur Christine

Scrawl Books

Urban Pop will be open Mondays through Fridays from 3 to 7 p.m. and select vendors will offer additional weekend hours.

In Spring 2016, Phase Two (Urban Pop Active), is slated to open. Comstock saud Phase Two will feature outdoor piazza entertainment — live entertainments, food and drink — integrated with Metro pedestrian access and the ‘jewel box’ retail, says Comstock spokeswoman Maggie Parker.

“Reston Station is delighted to deliver this exciting shopping opportunity to our neighborhood,” Parker said. We are thrilled to partner with our vendors to provide a unique shopping experience at the Wiehle-Reston Metro. “I can’t think of a better time to launch Urban Pop than at the start of the holiday season.”

Urban Pop is actively signing up vendors for January occupancy. For more information and leasing opportunities at Urban Pop, please visit www.urbanpopreston.com.

scrawl books/Credit: Scrawl Books via FacebookReston has been without a bookstore dedicated to new books since Barnes & Noble closed its doors in early 2013.

As of today, Reston has a bookstore again. Scrawl Books, an independently owned shop, opens Monday at Reston Station’s Urban Pop pop up stores.

Reston resident Rachel Wood, a longtime library employee, has been working on the Scrawl Books project for more than a year.

“We have had [books] coming in the last month or so, and I will have daily restocking from my vendors,” said Wood. She said the store will be at Urban Pop “until we are ready to go somewhere else.” She is still looking for longterm — and bigger — space.

Urban Pop is a row of small (about 100 square foot) retail spaces that Comstock is opening — starting today — on the Reston Station plaza. The stores will be a “curated mix of shops and artisans “that would be of benefit to commuters,” said Comstock spokeswoman Maggie Parker.

Scrawl Books will be open 3-7 p.m. weekdays and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Wood said Scrawl will hold a “petite” grand opening on Saturday (which is also Small Business Saturday). There will be readings/book signings with Leesburg author Maria Gianferrari (Penny & Jelly: The School Show) at 11 a.m. and Retson author Terry Catasús Jennings (Sounds of the Savannah) at noon. There will also be food from Greenfare in Herndon. Visit Scrawl Books’ website for more information.

Reston has a new co-working space that features more than 40,000 square feet for collaboration and innovation.

MakeOffices — the company formerly called UberOffices — opened it’s fifth D.C.-area location recently at 12110 Sunset Hills Road.

The new location takes up the sixth floor of JBG Companies’ RTC West, which will soon add a variety of restaurants and other mixed-use amenities to the ground floor of the complex.

MakeOffices is also in walking distance of Reston Town Center and the future Reston Town Center Silver Line Metro station.

The Reston location will hold an open house Wednesday at 5 p.m. featuring food from American Tap Room, as well as beer and wine.

“We are very excited to open our Reston Town Center location,” said MakeOffices founder Raymond Rahbar. MakeOffices also has locations in Tysons Corner, Rosslyn, Bethesda and Dupont Circle.

“Reston was the natural next step in our DC area expansion, given the growth in businesses and startup activity in the area, as well as the lack of affordable, flexible options to serve the Reston community. We are confident that startups and businesses large and small will appreciate our approach to co-working, and consider our offices to be the place where productivity meets collaboration,” said Rahbar.

Rahbar says the company, founded in 2013, is rebranding with the new name in order to have an new identity as the company grows. It has plans to open spaces in Philadelphia and Chicago soon.

Some of the features at MakeOffices Reston:

  • 112 private offices
  • 50 open desks
  • 9 conference rooms
  • soundproof studio space
  • 12 private call rooms
  • 10 huddle booths

Perks include massage chairs; free coffee, tea, water, wine and beer (from Vienna’s Caboose Brewing Co.); a large kitchen/eating space; wellness room for nursing mothers; and great views of the Reston Town Center.

There are a variety of monthly rates that begin at $300 for desk space. For more information and prices, visit MakeOffice’s website.
